In the United States, lawmakers have held hearings on the potential national-security implications of deepfakes, though no federal legislation specifically addresses the practice.

TikTok and Meta say their systems automatically flag certain synthetic visuals, and CNBC located several Venezuela-related videos on TikTok marked “AI generated.” X relies primarily on its community notes program, which permits users to append contextual information once misleading posts are identified. Critics argue the mechanism remains reactive and often activates only after thousands—or millions—of views have already accrued.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, recently acknowledged the scale of the problem. Writing on Threads, he cautioned that even as platforms improve their detection capabilities, AI tools will continue to advance, making it harder to separate genuine imagery from fabrications. He suggested that “fingerprinting real media” might ultimately prove more practical than trying to tag every synthetic asset.

The surge of synthetic celebration videos in Venezuela underscores the growing complexity of real-time fact-checking. Media forensics experts warn that authentic footage will increasingly compete with convincing AI renderings in the same news cycle. As audiences confront side-by-side images that appear equally plausible, the onus on both social platforms and traditional news outlets to authenticate material is likely to intensify.
For now, community-driven labeling, official press releases and professional fact-checking remain the primary defenses against deceptive AI media. Whether those measures can keep pace with the accelerating output of generative tools may determine how effectively the public can navigate future high-stakes events where distinguishing fact from fiction is critical.
