Within hours, the sheriff’s office coordinated a multi-agency response that ultimately covered more than 500 acres of heavily wooded terrain. Sheriff Nick Smith told reporters that the operation employed a helicopter equipped with thermal imaging, several drones, multiple police canines, 161 civilian volunteers and 126 first responders from surrounding counties and state agencies. Search teams worked in shifts through Wednesday night and all day Thursday as forecasts predicted dropping temperatures.
Location of discovery
On Friday afternoon, ground searchers focusing on a sector roughly two miles northwest of the residence located the boy and his dog. The area is characterized by dense underbrush, steep inclines and abandoned logging roads, factors that complicated the search effort, Smith explained. Emergency medical personnel at the scene confirmed the child was deceased. Buck appeared uninjured and was transported for veterinary evaluation before being returned to the family.
Family circumstances
Authorities said Boley’s parents are separated and share custody under a court order that grants the father five visitation days per year. The child was in Alabama for one of those scheduled visits when he disappeared. Sheriff Smith noted that the father previously served in the military but did not elaborate on his current occupation.
Boley’s mother, who resides in Florida, arrived in Alabama on Wednesday evening and had planned to pick up her son the following day. She has been in contact with investigators and is “fully cooperating,” Smith stated. No relatives are currently considered suspects, and investigators did not announce any detentions or charges during Friday’s press briefing.
Ongoing investigation
The sheriff’s office said detectives will review electronic data, interview additional witnesses and analyze forensic evidence collected at the scene. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is expected to conduct the autopsy, a process that could take several weeks depending on toxicology results. Until those findings are complete, officials declined to speculate on whether foul play was involved.

Missing-child specialists emphasize that the first 48 hours are critical in locating young children who wander away from familiar settings. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, most children who go missing on foot are found within a short radius of the last known location, but terrain and weather can significantly influence search outcomes.
Community response
Local churches, civic groups and businesses provided food, water and equipment during the two-day effort. “The outpouring of support from the community was tremendous,” Smith said, adding that volunteer turnout remained steady even as the search area expanded. Grief-counseling services are being organized for family members and first responders.
Officials have asked anyone with information about Boley’s movements between 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and the time he was found to contact the Walker County Sheriff’s Office tip line. Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from residents who may have surveillance cameras facing county roads or footpaths near the search perimeter.
Further updates will be released after the medical examiner issues a report and detectives complete initial interviews.
