A commuter train struck an SUV at a grade crossing in a suburban area of Chicago, according to video footage circulated on Monday. The clip, which lasts only a few seconds, captures the moment the train slams into the vehicle positioned on the tracks, pushing the SUV forward as sparks fly from the impact. No official information on injuries, fatalities or the precise location of the crossing had been released by local authorities at the time of reporting.
The recording shows the SUV stopped on the rails with its hazard lights flashing while crossing gates are either lowered or in the process of lowering. Within moments, the front of a multi-car commuter train enters the frame at speed and collides with the vehicle, sending it several yards down the line. The footage ends shortly after the initial impact, and it does not reveal what happened to any occupants inside the SUV. Because the images end abruptly, the condition of the driver, any passengers and train riders remains unknown.
The suburban Chicago region is served by extensive commuter rail networks that connect outlying communities to the city center. Trains on these routes often travel at speeds approaching 70 mph outside downtown stations, reducing reaction time for motorists who become stranded on tracks. Although it is not yet clear which line was involved, the corridor where the incident happened appears to have standard warning devices, including flashing lights and crossing arms, visible in the video.
