Donald Glover told fans in Los Angeles on Saturday night that a stroke he suffered last year led to the abrupt cancellation of his tour, an ailment he had previously described only in vague terms. The performer, 42, who records and tours under the name Childish Gambino, disclosed the diagnosis while on stage at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival.
“You guys voted for a ‘where have I been’ monologue,” Glover said during the set. He recounted feeling intense head pain while performing in Louisiana during the tour in question. Although struggling with vision problems, he finished the concert and traveled to Houston. There, a hospital physician informed him he had experienced a stroke.
The artist had not detailed the nature of his health crisis when the tour was cancelled, prompting speculation among ticket holders and industry observers. His admission on Saturday provided the first clear explanation of the abrupt halt. Glover told the audience he “felt like I was letting everyone down,” adding that the circumstances had prevented planned dates in Ireland and other locations.
