The exchange underscores Epstein’s efforts to insert himself into U.S.–Russia diplomatic calculations at a time of heightened tension between Washington and Moscow.
Early Financial Counsel to the Maldives
Another string of emails shows Epstein dispensing financial advice to Mohamed Waheed Hassan, who was president of the Maldives in 2013. Hassan asked whether to proceed with a proposal from an unnamed fund manager promising to deposit $4 billion in the island nation in return for government promissory notes. Calling the offer a “scam,” Epstein urged the president to reject it and detailed several warning signs that, in his view, rendered the deal suspicious.
Advice Circulated Inside Washington
Epstein also advised at least one individual attending the 2017 Alfalfa Club dinner, an annual gathering of political and business leaders in Washington. Seven days after Trump’s inauguration, the unnamed correspondent sought Epstein’s opinion on whether to raise the topic of the surgeon-general position with Jared Kushner. “Kushner does not care,” Epstein replied, instead recommending contact with real-estate investor Thomas Barrack and offering to provide additional guidance by phone.
Barrack, a longtime Trump ally who chaired the 2017 inaugural committee, later faced but was acquitted of charges that he acted as an unregistered foreign agent.
Regular Communication With Steve Bannon
Numerous emails involve Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist. In December 2018, Epstein and Bannon debated the president’s economic and security team. Epstein called Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin “ok” but argued that removing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell was “much more important than Syria/Mattis.” He also criticized Kushner and Ivanka Trump, writing that both “need to go.”
Bannon forwarded to Epstein a German media headline describing him as “as dangerous as ever.” Epstein responded “Luv it,” and proposed traveling to meet a foreign leader about strategy before returning to New York later that week.

Attempt to Influence Bill and Melinda Gates
In an unrelated January 2017 thread, Epstein informed his correspondent that “Bill met my friend Kathy Ruemmler, Obama counsel for 5 yrs,” and suggested that Ruemmler could present “the other side of Jeffrey” to Melinda Gates. The correspondent indicated uncertainty about whether that approach would succeed, noting that impressions might already be set.
Context of the Release
The emails form part of a larger cache obtained by congressional investigators examining Epstein’s network of relationships. The committee released the documents in full earlier this week; a summary is available on the House Oversight Committee’s official website. Lawmakers have not alleged wrongdoing by the individuals cited in the messages, and several names were redacted in the published versions.
Epstein’s communications occurred while he was seeking to re-establish influence after serving 13 months in a Florida jail on state charges related to procuring a minor for prostitution. Despite that conviction, the emails suggest he remained in close contact with prominent figures across political parties and national borders.
Federal prosecutors arrested Epstein in July 2019 on charges that he trafficked minors for sex at residences in New York and Florida. He died in August 2019 while awaiting trial.
The newly disclosed messages add detail to Epstein’s efforts to leverage personal connections and present himself as an indispensable adviser on the Trump administration’s dynamics. They also highlight the willingness of some officials to engage with him despite his criminal record, a factor likely to draw continued congressional and public scrutiny.
