FBI investigates death of 18-year-old passenger aboard Carnival Horizon

The death of an 18-year-old Florida student aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship has prompted a federal investigation after the vessel docked in Miami on Saturday.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that passenger Anna Kepner was found dead while the ship was sailing a Caribbean itinerary that departed from PortMiami. The exact circumstances of her death have not been released. Upon the ship’s return, the Federal Bureau of Investigation boarded the vessel, collected evidence and began interviews with crew members and travelers.

Under U.S. law, the FBI holds jurisdiction over suspicious deaths of American citizens on the high seas. The agency states that such cases are treated as potential federal crimes until facts indicate otherwise (FBI guidance). Investigators have not announced whether foul play is suspected, nor have they provided a timeline for when additional information may be made public.

The cruise line issued a brief statement indicating it is cooperating fully with authorities and focusing on providing assistance to Kepner’s relatives. No operational changes to the Horizon’s schedule were announced. The ship, which carries more than 4,000 guests, resumed its normal rotation following the disembarkation of passengers in Miami.

Kepner, a resident of Titusville, Florida, was in the final year of high school and expected to graduate in May 2026. Family members said she maintained top grades throughout her academic career and recently completed the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery in preparation for military service after graduation. According to relatives, she had been speaking with recruiters and intended to pursue a role that would allow her to serve her community.

Outside the classroom, Kepner devoted time to volunteer work in her grandparents’ 55-plus neighborhood and assisted local businesses in Titusville. Her family described her as someone who enjoyed social interaction and found it easy to build rapport with people of all ages. They noted that community service was an important part of her routine and that she regularly looked for opportunities to help others.

Sports and outdoor activities also played a significant role in her life. Kepner began gymnastics at age two and later earned a spot on her high school’s varsity cheerleading team. She completed the requirements for a boater’s license and obtained scuba certification, reflecting a strong interest in water-related pursuits. Friends and relatives said she spent free time near the ocean, shopping, and practicing makeup techniques—all hobbies she balanced alongside academic and athletic commitments.

Family members emphasized her close relationship with her grandmother, who affectionately used the nickname “Anna Banana.” They said Kepner’s energy often lifted the mood in any setting and that they take solace in knowing she remained active and engaged throughout her 18 years. Relatives expressed hopes that the public will remember her generosity, academic dedication and enthusiasm for future goals.

As the FBI inquiry continues, authorities have not provided a projected date for autopsy results or investigative findings. Carnival Cruise Line advised passengers who may have relevant information to contact federal agents. No additional passengers or crew have been reported injured, and there have been no announced security changes for upcoming sailings.
