FBI Posts $50,000 Reward as Hunt for Brown University Shooting Suspect Intensifies

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman responsible for Saturday’s fatal shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Federal agents from the bureau’s Boston Division are working alongside the Providence Police Department as the search for the suspect enters its fourth day.

Authorities released three surveillance images of an “unknown suspect” described as a male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a stocky build. The images, taken from security cameras in and around the Barus & Holley building on College Hill, depict the individual wearing dark clothing and moving through hallways shortly before shots were fired. Investigators have not yet connected a name to the person in the footage.

The campus shooting occurred late Saturday afternoon inside a second-floor classroom of the Barus & Holley physics and engineering complex. According to Providence police, two Brown University students died at the scene, and nine other people—eight students and one campus visitor—sustained gunshot injuries. Several of the wounded remain hospitalized, though officials have not disclosed their conditions. No victims have been publicly identified at the request of their families.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on social media Monday night that additional agents, analysts, and members of the bureau’s Evidence Response Team had arrived in Providence to assist local detectives. The team is processing physical evidence inside the building, while forensic specialists at the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, are examining ballistic material recovered from the scene. In a brief statement, Patel said agents were “tracking down leads, canvassing neighborhoods, and developing intelligence” in coordination with city police.

Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez released a short security video Monday afternoon that shows the person of interest walking briskly through a corridor moments before the shooting. The chief urged anyone who recognizes the individual to contact a dedicated tip line staffed jointly by city detectives and federal agents. Investigators are also asking every person who entered Barus & Holley on Friday or Saturday to come forward for interviews, emphasizing that even seemingly minor details could help reconstruct the suspect’s movements.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said state troopers will continue to provide investigative and patrol support to both the university and the city. In a written statement early Tuesday, the governor expressed confidence that the combined resources of state, local, and federal agencies would lead to an arrest, adding that the newly announced reward underscores the urgency of the investigation.

Brown University President Christina H. Paxson issued a campus-wide message Sunday evening denouncing the violence and extending condolences to the victims’ families. The university reopened most academic buildings Monday morning under heightened security, though classes scheduled inside Barus & Holley were relocated while forensic work continues. Counselors and student support staff have been made available across campus.

While officials have not disclosed a possible motive, detectives are reviewing class rosters, building access logs, and electronic communication records. Agents are also interviewing witnesses who reported seeing a man leave the area on foot immediately after the gunfire. Providence police have not stated whether they believe the suspect remains in the city.

Additional information about the reward and suspect description can be found on the FBI’s public wanted persons page, where tips may be submitted anonymously. Anyone with knowledge of the individual’s identity or whereabouts is urged to call the bureau’s Boston Division or the Providence Police Department. Investigators emphasized that all calls and online submissions will remain confidential.
