A weekend house fire in Gaston County, North Carolina, resulted in the death of Dennis Hamlin, father of NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin, and left the driver’s mother, Mary Lou Hamlin, with serious burn injuries, according to information released by county emergency officials.

Gaston County firefighters were dispatched at 6:19 p.m. on Sunday to the Hamlin family’s two-story residence in the unincorporated Stanley community. When the first units arrived, flames were visible throughout the attic and a large portion of the structure was already engulfed, the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services reported. Fire crews initiated an exterior attack while simultaneously searching the perimeter of the property for occupants.

Dennis Hamlin, 75, and Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, were located outside the home with what emergency personnel described as catastrophic injuries sustained while escaping the blaze. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment. Dennis Hamlin succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Mary Lou Hamlin was later transferred to a regional burn center, where she remains under active medical care, officials said.

The county fire marshal’s office has not yet determined what sparked the fire. Investigators spent several hours at the scene on Monday collecting physical evidence and interviewing witnesses. An official cause and origin report will be issued once the investigation is complete. In many residential fires, investigators focus on common ignition sources such as electrical faults, heating equipment, or cooking appliances, according to the National Fire Protection Association, though no specific factors have been identified in this incident.

Denny Hamlin, 45, is widely considered one of the most accomplished active drivers in NASCAR’s premier division. He is tied for 10th on the NASCAR Cup Series career wins list with 60 victories, including three Daytona 500 triumphs. Hamlin has not yet issued an extensive public statement regarding the fire, though representatives indicated he is with family while monitoring his mother’s condition.

Local authorities said initial 911 calls reported heavy smoke and visible flames at the home before firefighters arrived. Due to the intensity of the fire, crews from multiple neighboring stations responded to assist with water supply and suppression efforts. The structure was declared under control approximately 45 minutes after the first units reached the scene, but officials noted that significant damage had already occurred.

No other injuries were reported, and no surrounding structures were affected. Fire investigators have sealed off the residence while conducting a detailed inspection of debris, electrical systems, and potential accelerants. Results from laboratory testing, if required, could extend the timeline of the investigation, officials added.

Neighboring residents told authorities they heard smoke alarms and saw flames through upper-level windows shortly before emergency vehicles arrived. Investigators stated that both Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin appear to have exited the home under their own power before collapsing outside, where first responders rendered medical aid.

The Hamlin family has longstanding ties to the greater Charlotte racing community. Dennis Hamlin was known to attend many of his son’s races and frequently accompanied Denny Hamlin to NASCAR events. Mary Lou Hamlin likewise maintained a visible presence at tracks during milestone victories, including the driver’s debut Cup Series win at Pocono Raceway in 2006.

In accordance with standard protocol, the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management is working with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to review all available evidence. Investigators will analyze fire patterns, structural integrity, and witness statements to determine whether the blaze was accidental or if other factors contributed.

NASCAR officials expressed condolences to the Hamlin family and stated that the organization is prepared to provide support. Several fellow drivers and teams shared brief messages of sympathy on social media following confirmation of Dennis Hamlin’s death.

Funeral arrangements for Dennis Hamlin have not been announced. Updates on Mary Lou Hamlin’s condition are expected to be released by the treatment facility or family representatives when appropriate.
