Four People Wounded as Gunfire Disrupts Holiday Tree Lighting in Concord, North Carolina

Police in Concord, North Carolina, say an annual holiday tree-lighting celebration turned violent Friday evening when two people opened fire in the middle of a crowd, injuring four individuals and sending hundreds of attendees scrambling for safety.

According to Concord Police Maj. Patrick Tierney, the shooting erupted at approximately 7:30 p.m. along Union Street near its intersection with Corbin Avenue, only steps from the focal point of the city-sponsored event. Officers, firefighters and emergency medical teams were already on scene to staff the festivities and responded within seconds.

Sequence of events

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two individuals who knew each other. Detectives identified 18-year-old Nasir Ahmad Bostic as one of the alleged gunmen. Police allege that Bostic and a second suspect, described only as a juvenile male, exchanged gunfire while surrounded by spectators attending the ceremony.

During the exchange, both suspected shooters were struck. Bostic and the juvenile were transported to a local hospital, where each was listed in critical condition late Friday night. Maj. Tierney said Bostic will face numerous counts—including assault with a deadly weapon—once he is medically cleared. Authorities expect to serve a warrant on the juvenile suspect on similar charges as soon as doctors permit.

A third person, a 17-year-old whose name has not been released because of age, was not hit by bullets but was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Police say that teenager faces counts of accessory after the fact and inciting a riot for alleged involvement surrounding the confrontation.

Victim information

In total, four people suffered gunshot wounds. Three of them—including the two suspected shooters—were listed in critical condition; the fourth victim was reported in stable condition. Officials have not disclosed the identities of the other wounded individuals, citing ongoing notifications of family members and the sensitive nature of the investigation.

Immediate response

Because fire, police and EMS crews were already assigned to oversee the city’s tree-lighting ceremony, medical aid reached the injured within moments. Witnesses described a rapid transition from a festive atmosphere to chaos as sirens blared and officers ushered families away from the scene.

Detectives have begun reviewing surveillance and bystander video in an effort to map the movements of everyone involved. Officers also spent several hours conducting recorded interviews with witnesses who remained at the downtown staging area after the crowd had dispersed.

Ongoing investigation

Authorities have not indicated how many firearms were recovered or specified what type of weapons were used. Investigators also have not publicly discussed a motive beyond stating that the two primary suspects were acquainted. Maj. Tierney said additional information will be released when it does not jeopardize the case.

Concord, a city of roughly 105,000 residents, lies about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte. The tree-lighting ceremony is an annual event that typically draws large crowds to the historic downtown district. City officials have not yet announced whether future holiday events will be modified in light of the shooting.

Context

Large public gatherings have been the target of several high-profile shootings in recent years across the United States. Data compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice shows that incidents involving firearms at civic events often feature offenders who have prior connections to their victims, underscoring the challenges local agencies face when attempting to secure open, family-oriented spaces.

The Concord Police Department is urging anyone who recorded video or has additional information to contact detectives. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers hotline.
