Rev. Jesse Jackson Admitted to Hospital for Ongoing Neurological Treatment

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition reported Wednesday night that civil-rights advocate Rev. Jesse Jackson, 84, has been hospitalized for observation related to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). The organization said Jackson has been managing the neurodegenerative disorder for roughly ten years and is now under medical supervision to monitor his condition.

No details about the hospital’s location or the length of the anticipated stay were released. In a brief statement, the coalition noted that Jackson’s family “appreciates all prayers at this time.”

Jackson’s most recent public appearance occurred on July 31, 2025, when he greeted attendees at the National Bar Association’s annual convention in Chicago. The gathering, recognized as the largest network of predominantly Black legal professionals in the United States, also featured a scheduled keynote address by former President Joe Biden later that evening.

The organization clarified that Jackson was initially believed to have Parkinson’s disease but received a confirmed diagnosis of PSP in April 2025. While both illnesses affect movement and speech, PSP is distinguished by issues such as impaired balance and difficulties with eye motion. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, PSP remains a rare condition without a cure, and treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms and maintaining quality of life.

Jackson’s hospitalization follows his 2023 decision to step away from day-to-day leadership of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, an organization he founded that focuses on civil-rights advocacy, economic justice, and voter registration. He continues to hold the title of president emeritus.

Over several decades, Jackson gained national prominence as a protégé of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He became one of the most recognizable figures in the civil-rights movement, traveling widely to support desegregation efforts and launching voter-registration drives across the country. Jackson also sought the Democratic nomination for U.S. president in 1984 and 1988, campaigns that registered significant minority voter turnout and influenced the party’s platform.

In recent years, Jackson has continued to appear at public events despite health challenges. His family and associates have periodically updated supporters on his medical status, noting both his determination to remain active and the increasing difficulty posed by his condition. Wednesday’s announcement did not indicate whether additional statements would be provided as his hospitalization progresses.

PSP generally affects individuals over age 60 and can lead to stiffness, difficulty swallowing, and speech changes. Physicians often track the disease’s progression through regular neurological assessments and imaging studies. Jackson’s decision to seek hospital care suggests a proactive approach to monitoring symptoms that may require specialized treatment.

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition said no further information about Jackson’s treatment plan will be released at this time. Supporters are being asked to respect the family’s privacy while the civil-rights leader remains under medical observation.
