New York Jets Cornerback Kris Boyd Hospitalized in Critical Condition After Midtown Manhattan Shooting

New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd remained in critical condition on Sunday after being shot in Midtown Manhattan during the early hours of the morning, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and a statement released by the team.

Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 2:06 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 156 W. 38th Street, a commercial block located between Seventh Avenue and Broadway. When officers arrived, they found a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The NYPD did not immediately identify the injured individual, citing ongoing investigative procedures. However, the New York Jets confirmed that Boyd, 29, was the person wounded in the incident. “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and are in contact with his family. We have no further comment at this time,” the organization said in a brief statement.

Boyd, a defensive back who joined the Jets earlier this season, previously played for the Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings. A photograph from Oct. 31, 2024, shows him in uniform at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, during a game against his former team. Drafted by Minnesota in 2019, Boyd had appeared primarily on special teams before signing with New York as a free agent.

According to the preliminary police account, the shooting occurred on the sidewalk outside a mixed-use building that houses retail stores, offices and a late-night lounge. Detectives were reviewing surveillance footage, canvassing for witnesses and collecting ballistic evidence. As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been announced, and police had not disclosed a possible motive.

The incident adds to a series of violent episodes reported in Midtown over the past year. Further information on firearm-related injuries nationwide can be found through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which tracks nonfatal and fatal gunshot statistics across the United States.

Team officials said coaching staff and player representatives were at Bellevue Hospital shortly after Boyd arrived. Hospital administrators confirmed that he underwent emergency surgery and was placed in the intensive care unit. No additional medical updates were immediately available.

The Jets are scheduled to host the Buffalo Bills next Sunday at MetLife Stadium. League policy allows the club to designate an exempt list slot for injured players, but the team has not yet commented on Boyd’s roster status. The NFL and the NFL Players Association stated they are monitoring developments and will coordinate support resources for Boyd and his family.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. The investigation remains active.
