Three Rochester, New York, police officers were injured Friday night when a man opened fire at close range as they responded to a domestic disturbance report, authorities said. Officers returned fire during two separate exchanges, fatally striking the gunman and ending the confrontation within minutes of the first shots.
According to the Rochester Police Department, the incident began with a 911 call from a man who reported that his girlfriend’s former boyfriend was attempting to break into her home and might be armed. The caller told dispatchers he possessed a state-issued permit for his own handgun and was carrying the weapon for protection.
Officers arrived at the residence shortly after the call and found the alleged intruder on the side of the house. As the officers and the caller approached, the suspect drew a handgun without warning and fired multiple rounds at close range, striking two officers and narrowly missing the caller, police said.
