Medical evaluation and treatment plan
Fetterman opted to remain hospitalized so clinicians could “fine-tune his medication regimen,” his team said. Doctors continue to monitor his cardiovascular status and assess the effectiveness of any changes to his prescriptions. Ventricular fibrillation, a serious heart rhythm disturbance, can lead to sudden dizziness or fainting episodes. Detailed information about the condition is available from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
The hospital did not release a projected discharge date, but aides indicated Fetterman intends to resume Senate duties once physicians determine it is safe.
History of health issues
The 56-year-old senator has confronted a series of health challenges in recent years. In May 2022, during the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s open Senate seat, he suffered a stroke that limited his campaign appearances. Despite that setback, he secured the Democratic nomination and later defeated Republican nominee Dr. Mehmet Oz, who currently serves as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in President Donald Trump’s administration.
In February 2023, Fetterman spent several days in a Washington hospital after reporting light-headedness. At the time, doctors ruled out another stroke and found no evidence of seizures. Weeks later, he voluntarily admitted himself for inpatient treatment of depression. His chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, said then that the senator had experienced periods of depression throughout his life, but symptoms had intensified after his stroke recovery.
Senate responsibilities
Fetterman returned to Capitol Hill in April 2023 and has since participated in regular votes and committee hearings. On November 10, 2025, he spoke with reporters outside the Senate Chamber, addressing legislative priorities and ongoing federal budget negotiations. Colleagues on both sides of the aisle have acknowledged his attendance record and public engagement since resuming official duties.

The Senate is scheduled to convene next week to consider appropriations measures aimed at preventing another partial government shutdown. Fetterman’s staff said he plans to review the legislation remotely if necessary and travel to Washington once cleared by his doctors.
Political context
Fetterman, a former mayor of Braddock and lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, first assumed his Senate seat in January 2023. He has positioned himself as an advocate for manufacturing jobs, expanded health-care coverage and criminal-justice reform. His recent health episodes have not altered his committee assignments, which include Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and Environment and Public Works.
Party leaders have expressed confidence in his ability to continue serving. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office did not issue a formal statement, but aides said leadership is receiving regular updates about Fetterman’s condition. Republican counterparts also conveyed well wishes, according to staff familiar with internal communications.
Next steps
Medical personnel will determine when Fetterman can be discharged and whether any long-term adjustments are needed to manage potential future episodes of ventricular fibrillation. His office said additional information would be provided as it becomes available.
For now, the senator remains under observation, focusing on recovery while his team handles day-to-day legislative responsibilities in coordination with Senate leadership.
