Starbucks Selects Amazon Veteran Anand Varadarajan as Chief Technology Officer

Starbucks has appointed Anand Varadarajan, a longtime Amazon executive, as its new chief technology officer, advancing the coffee chain’s efforts to modernize its digital and store operations.

According to an internal communication seen by employees, Varadarajan will assume the role of executive vice president and CTO on January 19, 2025. He will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol and will oversee technology strategy, systems reliability, and digital innovation across the company’s global network of approximately 38,000 stores.

Nearly Two Decades at Amazon

Varadarajan spent almost 19 years at Amazon, most recently running technology and supply chain for the retailer’s worldwide grocery stores division. In that capacity, he oversaw both the Amazon Fresh banner and Whole Foods Market, reporting to Jason Buechel, Amazon’s grocery chief and CEO of Whole Foods. During his tenure, Amazon piloted several technology initiatives, including robotic micro-fulfillment centers inside select Whole Foods locations that allow customers to combine in-store items with products from Amazon’s broader inventory.

Before joining Amazon, the incoming CTO held software engineering positions at Oracle, giving him a background in enterprise systems — experience Starbucks says is essential as it scales platforms that support ordering, payments, and store operations.

Leadership Transition at Starbucks

Varadarajan replaces Deb Hall Lefevre, who left Starbucks in September amid a second wave of corporate staff reductions tied to a broader cost-saving initiative. That restructuring plan, valued at about $1 billion, is part of a turnaround strategy launched after Niccol took the helm of the company in September 2024.

In the memo announcing the hire, Niccol highlighted Varadarajan’s background in building secure, scalable systems and emphasized his track record of developing teams that support those platforms. Starbucks hopes that experience will accelerate projects aimed at improving speed of service, enhancing mobile ordering, and optimizing supply chain flows.

Turnaround Strategy Shows Early Results

The leadership change comes as Starbucks registers early signs of recovery. In its most recent fiscal quarter, same-store sales returned to positive territory for the first time in nearly two years, an indicator that dormant customers are revisiting the brand. The company also reported robust holiday sales despite intermittent labor actions by unionized baristas affecting a limited number of stores.

A cornerstone of the ongoing turnaround is Green Apron Service, a hospitality initiative budgeted at $500 million, making it the company’s largest direct investment in labor. Designed to address staffing levels and workflow efficiency, the program integrates technology upgrades such as improved order management tools and streamlined point-of-sale systems. Starbucks introduced the platform in response to the expansion of digital orders, which now account for more than 30% of total sales.

Focus on Technology and Customer Experience

Starbucks executives have repeatedly underscored the role technology will play in the chain’s growth. The company is enhancing personalization within its mobile app, testing new drive-thru configurations, and deploying back-of-house analytics to forecast demand. Varadarajan’s expertise in integrating physical retail with digital channels is expected to inform those initiatives.

At Amazon, the new CTO helped guide efforts to merge traditional grocery assortments with e-commerce capabilities, including fast delivery, expanded product selection, and data-driven inventory planning. Starbucks intends to apply similar practices to manage beverage customization, ingredient logistics, and store-level inventory, all aimed at reducing wait times and improving order accuracy.

Industry Context

Restaurant chains across the sector are intensifying investments in digital tools to capture consumer demand for convenience. Competitors such as McDonald’s, Chipotle, and Dunkin’ have rolled out enhancements ranging from loyalty program upgrades to artificial-intelligence-driven forecasting. By bringing in an executive with a background in large-scale retail technology, Starbucks seeks to maintain parity — and potentially gain an edge — in the race to optimize operational efficiency.

Varadarajan’s immediate priorities are expected to include stabilizing core systems, advancing the company’s cloud migration, and coordinating with operations teams to shorten service times. Starbucks has not disclosed specific financial targets tied to the CTO transition but has said technology investment remains integral to its broader $1 billion restructuring framework.

With the appointment set, Starbucks will finalize the leadership roster guiding the next phase of its turnaround. Varadarajan’s arrival aligns with the rollout of new menu items and store formats slated for early 2025, initiatives that will depend on integrated technology for execution and scale.
