Security personnel told the news agency that the suspect had maintained contact with numerous Islamic State sympathizers inside Turkey and in other countries. The same sources indicated that Burtakucin had also been looking for ways to travel to conflict zones where Islamic State elements remain active, although no further logistical details were disclosed.
The arrest in Malatya followed a separate set of nationwide operations announced one day earlier by the Istanbul prosecutor’s office. In those actions, security teams carried out simultaneous raids across multiple provinces and detained more than 100 people suspected of affiliation with Islamic State. Authorities said that the larger group taken into custody this week was likewise believed to be preparing attacks directed at both Christmas and New Year’s events.
Officials have not specified whether Burtakucin’s alleged activities were directly connected to the broader network targeted in Thursday’s raids, nor have they released information on any additional suspects linked to the Malatya investigation. Anadolu reported that questioning of the detainee is underway and that prosecutors will decide on formal charges once the interrogation and forensic review of the seized materials are complete.
Turkey’s police and intelligence services routinely increase vigilance in late December, a period marked by public gatherings, concerts, and other seasonal events that can attract large crowds. While authorities have confirmed the alleged intent to strike New Year’s celebrations in this case, they have not publicly identified the specific venues or cities that may have been targeted.
The National Intelligence Organization and the Interior Ministry have not issued separate statements on the operation. However, Anadolu’s account noted that coordination between law-enforcement agencies played a decisive role in tracking the suspect’s communications and organizing the arrest before any plan could advance.
Under Turkish counterterrorism procedures, suspects can be held for extended questioning before appearing in court, particularly in cases involving extremist groups. No timetable has been given for Burtakucin’s initial court hearing.
