Roughly half an hour later, the Tobago Police District received an emergency call about an unresponsive man on Depot Road, less than a mile from the restaurants the group had visited. Officers arriving shortly after 10:30 p.m. found Brown lying on the roadway with multiple injuries. A metallic object, later identified by investigators as a knife, was protruding from his back.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced Brown dead at the scene. An initial assessment recorded more than one stab wound, though authorities have not released the exact number or described a possible sequence of events that led to the attack. An autopsy is pending to confirm the cause and manner of death, officials said.
During the overnight operation that followed, detectives canvassed the area, collected physical evidence and interviewed residents and business owners near the crime scene. By Thursday morning, police had detained one individual for questioning. The person in custody had not been formally charged as of late Friday, and investigators declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
The Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation of the Tobago House of Assembly expressed condolences to Brown’s family and denounced the violence. In a public statement, the division said the killing had shocked the normally quiet community of Castara, which is popular with international visitors for its beach, fishing and eco-tourism activities.

While Tobago is generally regarded as more tranquil than Trinidad, the larger island of the twin-island nation, isolated incidents of violent crime occasionally draw international attention. The U.S. Department of State currently lists Trinidad and Tobago at Level 2, advising travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime; the advisory notes that violent acts have occurred in both urban and rural areas (travel.state.gov).
Bahamian authorities are cooperating with Trinidad and Tobago officials in the investigation. Law enforcement agencies are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and forensic teams are analyzing items retrieved from the scene, including the knife recovered from Brown’s back. Officers have also requested assistance from residents who might have witnessed Brown’s movements between the two restaurants or seen suspicious activity along Depot Road.
Police have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region II, or report anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline. No motive has been confirmed, and officials have not indicated whether robbery, narcotics or any prior dispute played a role in the attack. The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding Brown’s death and decide whether to bring formal charges against the suspect in custody.
