Authorities in Tobago are investigating the fatal stabbing of Christopher Brown, a 42-year-old visitor from Silverthorne, Colorado, whose body was discovered late Wednesday in the seaside village of Castara, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

Brown had traveled to the Caribbean island on vacation and was spending the evening with friends when the incident occurred. Police said he was first seen dining with his group at Marguarites Local Cuisine in Castara on Wednesday night. After finishing the meal, the friends moved to a nearby restaurant and bar for drinks, continuing their social outing along the community’s main coastal road.

Investigators stated that, at approximately 10:00 p.m. local time, Brown informed his companions he intended to purchase marijuana and left the second establishment alone. Witnesses reported seeing him walk southbound on the primary thoroughfare that links the village center to surrounding neighborhoods. It was the last time he was observed alive, police noted in their preliminary report.

Roughly half an hour later, the Tobago Police District received an emergency call about an unresponsive man on Depot Road, less than a mile from the restaurants the group had visited. Officers arriving shortly after 10:30 p.m. found Brown lying on the roadway with multiple injuries. A metallic object, later identified by investigators as a knife, was protruding from his back.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced Brown dead at the scene. An initial assessment recorded more than one stab wound, though authorities have not released the exact number or described a possible sequence of events that led to the attack. An autopsy is pending to confirm the cause and manner of death, officials said.

During the overnight operation that followed, detectives canvassed the area, collected physical evidence and interviewed residents and business owners near the crime scene. By Thursday morning, police had detained one individual for questioning. The person in custody had not been formally charged as of late Friday, and investigators declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.

The Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation of the Tobago House of Assembly expressed condolences to Brown’s family and denounced the violence. In a public statement, the division said the killing had shocked the normally quiet community of Castara, which is popular with international visitors for its beach, fishing and eco-tourism activities.

While Tobago is generally regarded as more tranquil than Trinidad, the larger island of the twin-island nation, isolated incidents of violent crime occasionally draw international attention. The U.S. Department of State currently lists Trinidad and Tobago at Level 2, advising travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime; the advisory notes that violent acts have occurred in both urban and rural areas (travel.state.gov).

Bahamian authorities are cooperating with Trinidad and Tobago officials in the investigation. Law enforcement agencies are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and forensic teams are analyzing items retrieved from the scene, including the knife recovered from Brown’s back. Officers have also requested assistance from residents who might have witnessed Brown’s movements between the two restaurants or seen suspicious activity along Depot Road.

Police have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region II, or report anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline. No motive has been confirmed, and officials have not indicated whether robbery, narcotics or any prior dispute played a role in the attack. The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding Brown’s death and decide whether to bring formal charges against the suspect in custody.
