Her husband, Mauricio Velasquez, said he was standing beside his wife when the shot was fired. Speaking in Spanish to a local television station, he recalled seeing her step backward before collapsing into his arms. “I never imagined it was gunfire,” he said. “When I saw the blood, it was everywhere.” He called for “justice” in the case, noting the impact on their family.
Police have not publicly identified the person who discharged the weapon. No arrests had been announced as of Thursday afternoon. The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department stated it is working “closely with the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure every aspect of this case is handled with care and diligence.” Prosecutors are reviewing evidence to determine whether criminal charges will be filed; officials said that decision could take several days because of what they described as the investigation’s complexity.
