Virginia voters elected Abigail Spanberger as the state’s first female governor, according to NBC News. Spanberger, a former CIA officer and three-term member of the U.S. House, defeated Republican nominee Winsome Sears. Her campaign emphasized public-school funding, infrastructure investments and bipartisan cooperation in Richmond.
The same Virginia ballot delivered another statewide win for Democrats as Jay Jones is projected to unseat Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares. Jones, a former state delegate, overcame late-cycle headwinds stemming from 2022 text messages in which he discussed violence against then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Despite those revelations, Jones secured sufficient support to reclaim the office for his party.
Beyond individual races, Democrats obtained favorable results in several policy and judicial contests:
- California voters approved Proposition 50, a constitutional amendment authorizing use of a new congressional map widely expected to benefit Democratic candidates in upcoming U.S. House elections.
- In Pennsylvania, three incumbent Democratic justices were retained on the state Supreme Court, preserving the court’s 5-2 Democratic majority.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer cited the string of outcomes as evidence of voter rejection of former President Donald Trump’s agenda. In a written statement released before all races were officially called, Schumer said the results showed that “cruelty, chaos, and greed that define MAGA radicalism” had been turned back. Schumer had not endorsed Mamdani during the primary season but hailed the general-election victories as support for Democratic efforts to “lower costs” and “improve healthcare.”
Trump, posting on social media, attributed Republican losses to his absence from the ballot and to the ongoing federal government shutdown that began on Oct. 1. He suggested unnamed polling showed the shutdown and his non-participation drove turnout against GOP candidates.
With the mayor’s office in the nation’s largest city, two governorships and a statewide legal post changing hands, Tuesday’s results reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2026 midterms. According to voter-turnout data compiled by the Federal Election Commission, off-year elections historically draw lower participation than presidential cycles, magnifying the impact of base mobilization and local organizing. Early tallies indicated turnout levels exceeded those recorded in the 2021 off-year contests, particularly in urban and suburban counties.
Democratic strategists credited coordinated efforts by labor unions, abortion-rights groups and climate organizations for higher engagement in key regions. Republican officials pointed to the government shutdown’s economic ripple effects as a factor dampening their party’s performance, while also noting that several contests were held in states President Joe Biden carried in 2024.
The transfer of power in New York will give Mamdani authority over a city budget exceeding $100 billion and responsibility for negotiating new contracts with major municipal unions. In New Jersey, Sherrill will inherit ongoing debates over property-tax relief and the implementation of the state’s clean-energy goals. Spanberger in Virginia faces a narrowly divided General Assembly, setting the stage for immediate negotiations on education spending and transportation projects.
Certification of the election results is expected in the coming weeks, with inauguration ceremonies scheduled for early January in each jurisdiction. No major legal challenges had been filed as of Wednesday morning.
