Robinhood Launches Discounted Mortgage Program for Gold Subscribers

Online brokerage Robinhood has added mortgage lending to its product lineup, offering home loans at below-market rates to customers enrolled in its Robinhood Gold subscription plan. The service, developed in partnership with Sage Home Loans, follows a beta phase conducted earlier this year and is now being deployed to eligible users across the United States.

Under the arrangement, Sage will provide mortgage rates at least 0.75 percentage point lower than the current national average. In addition, borrowers can receive a $500 credit applicable to closing costs on both purchase and refinance transactions. A subscription to Robinhood Gold—priced at $5 per month or $50 annually—is required to access the discount, and only customers with an annual membership qualify for the closing-cost credit. A 30-day trial of Gold is available, but temporary subscribers do not receive the mortgage benefit.

Sage Home Loans, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, originated more than $750 million in mortgages during 2024, according to government filings under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. The lender is owned by Red Ventures, a private digital-media company. Sage advertises a fully online application process and states that prospective buyers can secure a pre-approval letter in roughly four minutes, enabling faster home-shopping timelines.

Data reviewed by Yahoo Finance show that Sage’s median loan expenses in 2024 totaled $4,642, while the lender’s median interest rate stood near 6.245%. For comparison, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate exceeded 7% for part of the year, according to weekly figures published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Robinhood Technologies, founded in 2013, built its brand by eliminating trading commissions on stocks and exchange-traded funds. Before the launch of its mobile app, the firm attracted a waiting list of approximately one million prospective users. The company has since introduced cryptocurrency trading and fractional share purchases, permitting investments in high-priced equities for as little as one dollar. The new partnership with Sage represents Robinhood’s first move into the mortgage sector and aligns with its stated mission to “democratize finance for all.”

The mortgage initiative is currently limited to Robinhood Gold members, a segment that also receives benefits such as a higher cash sweep rate and access to extended trading hours. Gold subscribers who open an individual retirement account through Robinhood may qualify for a 3% contribution match, and the platform offers a 1% bonus on eligible asset transfers.

To obtain the discounted home loan, a Gold member begins the process through the Robinhood interface and is then routed to Sage’s digital application. Borrowers must meet Sage’s underwriting criteria and comply with standard documentation requirements, including income verification and credit evaluation. Once approved, customers can lock in the reduced interest rate and apply the $500 credit toward third-party fees at closing.

The introduction of below-market mortgages intensifies competition among fintech companies targeting first-time and cost-conscious homebuyers. Several online lenders already advertise streamlined digital processes, but few combine subscription-based pricing with direct rate concessions. By tying the offer to its existing membership model, Robinhood aims to increase customer retention while expanding into a new revenue stream.

No end date has been announced for the promotional rate or the closing-cost incentive, and both companies indicated that the terms could change based on market conditions. Consumers interested in the program are advised to compare multiple loan offers and review total costs, including lender fees and prepaid expenses.
