Alleged Plate Swap During the Trip
Detectives now believe Ashlee Buzzard altered the vehicle’s identifying information while on the road. Zick said investigators have evidence that the California plate issued to the rental car was removed at some point during the interstate drive and a different plate was installed in its place. Upon arriving back in Lompoc on Oct. 10, Ashlee allegedly reattached the original California plate before returning the vehicle.
“The circumstances suggest the license plate was switched to avoid detection,” Zick stated, adding that investigators have found no other plausible reason for the change. Law-enforcement teams are reconstructing the vehicle’s movements in an effort to determine where and when the plate exchange occurred and how long the alternate tag remained on the car.
Focus on Critical 24 Hours
The joint investigation, led by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the FBI’s Child Abduction and Kidnapping unit, is centered on the period between the final confirmed sighting on Oct. 9 and the mother’s solo return on Oct. 10. Detectives are reviewing highway surveillance systems, toll-booth data and eyewitness accounts along the route that crosses California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the alternate license plate number or its state of origin.
Officials say Ashlee Buzzard has declined to cooperate with the investigation. No arrests have been made, and the child remains listed as a missing person. Last week, sheriff’s personnel executed a follow-up search warrant at the Buzzard family home in Lompoc, collecting additional evidence and interviewing neighbors. Details of items seized during that search were not released.

Melodee Buzzard is described by authorities as 4 feet 5 inches tall and weighing approximately 75 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Anyone who may have seen her or the rental vehicle between Oct. 7 and Oct. 10 is urged to contact the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
As the investigation enters its fourth week, detectives continue to analyze physical evidence gathered from the rental car and the family home. Search teams remain focused on narrowing down the vehicle’s precise movements during the critical 24-hour window when Melodee was last seen.
